EU Actions Against Food Waste

  • Legislation on food waste prevention is part of EU waste legislation. It is oriented towards sustainability and resource efficiency rather than food security and nutrition.
  • Responsibility for food waste prevention policy remains mostly with Member States. Actions on EU level have generally supporting character: EU Platform, guidance and recommendations, knowledge gathering and sharing.
  • With soft measures in place, European Commission is currently considering legally binding food waste reduction targets, with a view for stronger and better-coordinated actions from Member States.
