Antonio Caruso

Antonio Caruso is a lawyer, official of the European Commission, working in Directorate General for Competition (DG COMP), in the “B” directorate, Energy and Environment sector, unit B3, on State aid cases and policy on energy and environment.
Since October 2013, Mr. Caruso has been involved in State aid policy and case-handling in several sectors, primarily energy and environment, focusing on cases of support to renewables, biofuel, energy infrastructures, waste-to-energy, capacity mechanisms and environmental aid. During this period, he has also worked on state aid matters in cohesion policy (”Regional aid”), agricultural sector and on several projects relating to infrastructure and motorway concessions. Previously, he has been exposed to competition policy and regulatory issues in the food-supply sector, working as of 2012 in the “Food-Task-Force” of DG COMP, and still in DG COMP, working since 2005 onwards in the Cartels’directorate, on leniency and cartel enforcement in the EU. Previous work engagements include also the Legal Service and enforcement units of the Italian Antitrust Authority, dealing with mergers, cartels and abuses, as well as State-driven distortions of competition.Before public service, Mr. Caruso practiced as a lawyer for Freshfields/Deringer Brussels law firm, and in a law firm in Italy.
