Dario Nicolella
Senior Expert at the Italian Department for Cohesion Policy – former Head of Sector at the European Commission and former Internal Auditor at FAO
Dario Nicolella is a Senior Expert at the Italian Department for Cohesion Policy, where he supports the design, implementation, and oversight of policies and programmes financed by the European Union. He also works as a consultant for several government agencies.
Previously, he served as an Internal Auditor at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Before that, he worked for the European Commission between 2013 and 2025, where he held the positions of Head of Sector in the Joint Audit Directorate for Cohesion (DAC), Programme Manager for Erasmus+ in DG EAC, and member of the Internal Audit Service.
He has extensive experience in Cohesion Policy, having been responsible for the audit of more than 30 Operational Programmes funded under the ERDF, ESF+, FEAD, and Interreg in seven EU Member States. He coordinated and participated in expert working groups between the European Commission and Member States on grant management, public procurement, simplified cost options, and financing not linked to costs. He was also a member of the ESF+/ERDF Transnational Network on Simplification.
As a lecturer, he has delivered internal training courses for the European Commission and workshops for Member States within the TAIEX framework.
Dario Nicolella has an academic background in economics and public administration, as well as a master’s degree in philosophy.
