Managing Director of the European Union’s largest refugee camp based on Lesvos Island, Greece, and Director of the Theophrastus Research Institute

Dr. Dimitrios Kantemnidis is the Managing Director of the European Union’s largest refugee camp based on Lesvos Island, Greece. He is also the Director of the Theophrastus Research Institute which conducts independent research and policy consultation on connections among environment and diverse economic, social, and political challenges.

He served as a naval officer in the Greek Navy for 17 years after receiving his bachelor’s degree from the Hellenic Naval Academy. He held the post of commanding officer (CO) and second in command officer (XO) on numerous warships. He completed postgraduate studies at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School where he earned a Master of Science in Physics and a Master of Arts in Security Studies (Civil-Military Relations). He received his PhD in Environmental Science from the University of Aegean and he is an alumnus of the Doctoral School of the European Security and Defense College in Brussels. His research was funded by the State Scholarships Foundation of Greece and was focused on “how the EU-actors integrate the environmental security dimensions into their Common Security and Defence Policy”.
