-Data Protection Day-

On Wednesday, it will be data protection day! The day will be celebrated all over Europe, and will provide the backdrop to numerous data protection themed events. Given the release of this issue falls just prior to the day, we thought it might be nice to include a brief introduction to it for those not familiar. Data protection day is celebrated yearly on 28th of January. Its tradition stretches back to 2006, when the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe decided to designate the day as such. Significantly, the date marks ‘the anniversary of the opening to signature of the Convention for the Protection of Individuals with regard to Automatic Processing of Personal Data (ETS No. 108)’. Whilst this data protection instrument is perhaps not the most prominent in day-to-day discussions of data protection in the EU, it holds great historical importance, and its modern variant continues to play an important role in higher order discussions of data protection law, as well as in relation to data protection outside the EU. Enjoy the day!
