Harold Nyssens has a wide range of experience in state aid policy and energy law. Since 2015, he works as the deputy head of unit for the directorate general competition. More specifically, he is in charge of policy developments related to state aid and infrastructure and managing cases which are focused on infrastructure and regional aid.  From 2011 to 2014 Mr. Nyssens was a member of the Commissioner Damanaki’s cabinet, in charge of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.  After working for five years at the EU General Court, Mr. Nyssens worked in the European Commission as a case handler on the Antitrust Energy unit. He has extensive experience in state aid law.

Mr. Nyssens studied law at the St. Louis University in Brussels, University of Leuven, Edinburgh and Saarbrücken. In addition to his work at the European Commission, Mr. Nyssens was also a lecturer in European Competition Policy in various universities and master programmes such as MERNI (Bonn University, Master in Energy law), MEEL (Environment & Energy LLM programme, Leuven University) and the MBA Programme at the Saarbrücken University. Mr. Nyssens is fluent in French, English, German, Dutsch and Italian.
