Topics

On the first day, Phedon Nicolaides will give you a thorough review of the latest Court rulings and Commission decisions on:

  • Concept of State aid
  • Exceptions from the interdiction of State aid

We welcome topic suggestions – if you have an issues of particular importance to your practice, please let us know.  You can also choose topics you would like to discuss from Phedon Nicolaides blog “State Aid Uncovered”.

Your advantage: After one day, you will be up to date about the latest developments in the field of State aid law!

The second day is especially designed for your questions and cases. Do you work on a State aid case and don´t know how to handle it? Or have you had any problems with State aid in the past? This is your opportunity to discuss any question about State aid you might have.

The issues raised by participants will be discussed and you will receive advice on how to improve your own State aid measures and ensure their compatibility with the internal market.

Cases and Confidentiality: The participants will be required to submit a brief summary of the problem or case they want to present for discussion and advice in advance. Information concerning such problems and cases shall be treated confidentially.

This high-level event is intended for officials and professionals who have good knowledge of State aid or are working on projects that may involve State aid. The acquaintance with the principles of State aid law and its several regulations is essential for the participation in the experts’ discussion on the recent developments in State aid and their implications for the practice.

The participants will receive extensive case notes for personal use as well as a certificate of participation.

Methodology

A Master Class is a high-level event for professionals and officials involved in State aid. The purpose of the Master Class is to review important developments in State aid case law and the decisional practice of the European Commission, assess their implications for the Member States and public authorities and to improve your State aid measures. Participants are encouraged to submit a summary of the problem or case they want to present for discussion in advance. This information will of course be treated confidentially.

The sessions will combine presentations, case studies and discussion on practical issues. You will have ample opportunities to present your own issues and discuss them with speakers and participants from other countries.

Review and Assessment

On the first day, you receive an expert review of the latest Court rulings and Commission decisions. Seminal judgments and decisions are analyzed in depth. The analysis identifies how principles are applied in specific situations, delineates possible exceptions and draws out the implications for State aid policies.

Problem Solving

The second day is devoted to cases and questions submitted by participants. State aid measures, problems and other issues from the daily practice of participants are discussed and difficulties resolved. Participants receive advice on how to improve their measures and ensure their compatibility with the internal market.

Best Practices

On both days, the format of this advanced small-scale Master Class enables you to consider wider issues of relevance to officials and practitioners involved in State aid. You can exchange information and experience with professionals from other countries.
